Depression is a very difficult thing to live with. Though many people feel that depression can only be diagnosed through a doctor, there are other reasons that may cause it. Certain life events may cause a person to feel depressed and have difficulty in coping, such as those listed below.

1. Loss of a loved one: We all cope with things differently and losing a loved one can really send some people into a serious state of depression. Losing a loved one can be a very difficult thing to deal with, particularly if it is a close relative or friend. So it’s no wonder that this loss can leave somebody feeling depressed and vulnerable. This depression may worsen as the loss is felt in everyday life, and may last for quite some time as adjustments become quite difficult.

2. Loss of a job: Though it’s quite common in today’s economy, the loss of a job may be a very difficult one for people to adjust to. They may feel defeated, may feel as though they’ve lost a big part of their identity. Additionally those who lose the job then have to worry about how they will pay bills and support their family, as well as how they will find a new job. Therefore this is a loss that can really cause great depression and a lot of problems for somebody.

3. Weight gain and appearance: It seems to be a vicious cycle because often those who are depressed tend to eat more and this affects their appearance. Just the opposite situation may be true as well. They may see something different when they look in the mirror than others do. They may feel isolated and alone because of their weight gain, or feel unhappy about their overall appearance. This can really do a number on a person’s mental health and cause them to become quite depressed.

4. A breakup from a relationship: Breaking up is hard to do, and it can cause some serious depression. For those that have been through a bad breakup, they know the state of depression that it can cause. For some people, this depression lingers on and doesn’t seem to go away over time. This can be rather serious as the person feels alone and saddened by the loss of their significant other.

5. Loneliness: Depression and loneliness seem to go hand in hand, and often they may cause each other as well. So for those who are lonely, they may feel that isolation turn into full fledged depression. This can worsen the problem and turn into a vicious cycle that tends to cause unhappy sentiments for some time to come.

Being depressed isn’t always about a clinical reason. There are several life events that can bring on or cause depression, and they should be taken just as seriously.
